We are a Internet Relay Chat provider with 28 years of experience.
Throughout all this long time, we have operated various IRC Networks. Now we are focused on secure and private chat, utilizing Secure IRC (IRCS), that uses encrypted connections to protect communications from eavesdropping. To further protect our users, we have enabled IP cloaking and spam filtering. Nicknames and channels can also be safely registered, using our Network Services.
Brief history
Velatus is a successor of IRCWorld IRC network, which was formed in 2000. IRCWorld IRC Network was in turn successor of BlastNet IRC Network, which was formed in the end of 1990s. At some point there was a split between them, but this is ancient history.
We appreciate our past, historic staff members: Hawkie (BlastNet), WizKid (BlastNet), daNurve (BlastNet), albert_x (IRCWorld), bz0r (IRCWorld), C (IRCWorld), GQ (IRCWorld), Level (IRCWorld).
Only two of those long-time staff members, from BlastNet and IRCWorld eras, remain on Velatus today –
ApA and Summy.
Our mission
In our opinion, IRC is still the best chat protocol, especially next to the current “commerce” and dubious privacy of corporate messengers. We believe in free speech and privacy, so we have built a network, based on those principles, for our users. Therefore our mission is to keep shielding our users, make Velatus Secure Chat a private, secure, pleasant communication medium for them and to bring back IRC, as a everyday communication tool for everyone.
Disclaimer
IRC is an unmoderated medium.
Velatus Secure IRC Network does not log or scrutinize the traffic which passes through this Secure IRC Service. We take no responsibility, and explicitly disclaim any legal liability for the content of any messages which pass through our servers, and the results of running any commands users do, as a result of being “on IRC”.
Rules
All Velatus Secure Chat users including the staff must follow the network’s rules. Velatus users must agree with the following rules and regulations while they are connected to the Velatus servers:
• No faked or altered user@host information
• No denial of service (“DoS”) actions or abuse of Velatus resources, including but not limited to flooding, cloning, mass-messaging, and mass-inviting.
• No Unsolicited advertising to Velatus users.
• No scamming of Velatus users.
Each server’s administrative team retains the right to deny access to or use of its server’s resources to any user(s), group, site, or domain, without the benefit of prior warning or notification if they so choose.
By connecting to the Velatus servers, users hereby agree to comply with current server’s rules.
The Velatus Secure Chat greatly appreciates users attention and compliance with these regulations.
IRC in general
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a text-based chat system for instant messaging. IRC is designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing.
IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen (WiZ) in August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser Talk) on a BBS called OuluBox at the University of Oulu in Finland, where he was working at the Department of Computer Science.
